I hear them out. And make my decision.
Often, I write about an inspiring person or a group of individuals. Their stories touch me and I show my reader why. Such stories connect with readers who may or may not know the person I have written about.
Over time, my stories have found many new readers. And I now get direct messages from interested people who pitch their stories to me. Some offer background material. A few have even volunteered to write it for me 🙂
It amuses me.
I am not a writer you can hire for public relations. I write what comes from within me. And the reader can sense it.
I cherish the process of writing. I don’t write only for the love of seeing it published. When my fingers follow my thoughts, it is a magical feeling. Much like an adrenaline rush.
I am open to writing stories about people I do not know. I am happy to hear what you have done and how it has impacted others. But the decision to write or not is mine.
I mostly write about those who have not been written about. At least not in the manner I intend to. Once in a while, when I have written about a much-celebrated person, it has been about my experience with him and how he has touched my heart. It is a personal story that can interest readers.
I write about my experiences and learnings. And what inspires me. I am not competent to write on demand. If pushed, I struggle to complete it. So, I don’t even try.
The chief factor behind my writing apart from it being close to my heart is – the reader should’ve something in the story to take away.
I don’t use keywords. Or check for SEO. I don’t indulge in listicle writing. I don’t write ‘5 Reasons or 10 Ways to do/avoid something’ only because such pieces tend to attract readers. That does not mean I will never write such a piece. I have seen and learnt enough to say ‘never’. If the story requires it, I will write it. But not for clickbait purposes.
I don’t disrespect those who do. ‘To each, his own’ has been my mantra since I can remember. You do what works for you. I choose what I believe in.
Writing has always been therapeutic to me. I follow a simple process. Something touches my heart. Or I feel strongly about an issue. The thoughts flow and the words form. Naturally.
Those who know me are aware of the process. But there are many readers who don’t. If you are one of them, this is what you should know:
None of those I have written about have urged me to write about them. A few were not aware till it was published. Some who knew were hesitant, but later agreed because of the larger purpose of inspiring readers. Or helping them make the right choice.
In a case or two, the acceptance came because I am the writer. As one of them put it, “I am not sure if my story should be written at all. But if it needs to be told, I’d much rather you write it.”
I am eternally grateful. For the trust. And to you my reader for taking time out to indulge me.
