You pause. You think. And you look at something you haven’t touched yet.
This is Nugget No. 200, and it isn’t a celebration piece. It’s a survival piece.
The Reality No One Wants to Admit
Jobs are shrinking. Opportunities are thinning. Security is a myth.
And yes, AI is part of the conversation, but it’s not the whole story.
Even without AI, companies are tightening, industries are struggling, and roles are vanishing, not because people suddenly became incapable, but because the world is changing.
I personally know people who’ve been job-hunting for months… and in some heartbreaking cases, years. These are not mediocre people; they’re capable, qualified and hardworking. And yet, the door isn’t opening.
Sometimes the problem isn’t you; it’s the market.
Here’s the most challenging part: At mid and senior levels, this problem hits harder. There are fewer opportunities, smaller windows, and longer waits.
So, if the industry itself is going through turbulence, where do you even go?
That’s when life asks you a quiet question: “What else can you do?”
The One Skill We All Need (But Rarely Build)
There’s one thing I believe everyone should have: A second skill. Not a hobby, a fallback “if life collapses” fantasy, but a real, strong, monetizable skill that you’re genuinely good at and people are willing to pay for. And you can pivot into it if life demands it.
Think of it as job insurance.
Many people feel guilty even thinking about another path.
“This isn’t what I was trained for.”
“I’ve never done this formally.”
“What if I fail?”
Here’s a counterintuitive thought: Sometimes your second skill knows you better than your first one ever did.
Maybe you were always good at something else. Maybe life pushed you into Plan A, but your soul always leaned toward Plan B. You just never gave it oxygen.
Will pivoting be uncomfortable? Absolutely.
Will it take work? Of course.
But if you have a high level of skill, deep passion and the resolve to go all in, then the question isn’t “Can I do this?”
The real question is: “Can I afford not to?”
Diversification Works For Career, Too
Financial advisers tell us never to put all our investments in one asset.
Then why do we risk everything — time, energy, identity — on a single professional skill?
If diversification protects wealth, shouldn’t it protect worth, too?
Don’t Have a Second Skill Yet? Start Now.
If you already know what your second skill is, sharpen it. Nurture it. Don’t let it sleep.
And if you don’t, start right away.
Think of the things you once loved but couldn’t pursue because life decided differently. The things that excited you, stretched you, made you feel alive. Pick one and begin. Not tomorrow. Not when life is “settled.” Not “someday.” Now.
And please don’t say, “I don’t have time.” You do.
Remember you heard Amitabh Bachchan say (don’t ask me the name of the film): “Waqt hota nahi… nikalna padta hai.”
Because in a world of uncertainty, your second skill isn’t a luxury; it may just be your lifeline. And that’s worth protecting.
Let 2026 be the year you sharpen your second skill so profoundly, so confidently, that if life requires you to pivot, you won’t panic.
You’ll be ready.
Staying with Bollywood, you’ve heard what Raj, played by Shah Rukh Khan, said in DDLJ (that became memorable).
“Palat”.
That was 30 years ago. In 2026, it’s time to change the script.
The word is Pivot.
About Me
I am a thinker at all times. I see, I think. I hear, I think. I read, I think. Every weekend I write. I would love to know what you think.
